In 2017, Lyme purchased the Logan property with an existing forest carbon project. Actively managed under the FSC certification program, the New Markets Tax Credits program financed the establishment of a logging business using winch-assist harvesting technology on the property’s steep slopes. Winch-assist systems make logging jobs safer and higher-paying, reduce soil compaction and erosion, and support quality silviculture.

Molpus’s management focus for this property is on promoting healthy forest growth and productivity through sustainable management practices, while maximizing financial returns. The forest carbon offset project is a key component to meeting those objectives.

Contiguous with the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, the Lyme Wisconsin property is dominated by northern hardwoods and is part of a larger matrix of native habitats including hemlock, spruce, cedar and tamarack forests. The property contains wild river tributaries, natural lakes, extensive wetlands and is subject to a working forest conservation easement held by the Wisconsin DNR, which ensures the property will remain as a sustainably managed forest in perpetuity.

Yalbac Ranch was once part of the Belize Estate Company and its forests were logged for a few select species including mahogany, cedar, and Santa Maria. In 1994, the Yalbac Ranch and Cattle Corporation purchased the property and partnered with The Forestland Group in 2008. The sub-tropical property’s 153 merchantable forest species are now managed to the Forest Stewardship Council standard.
