Historical land uses within the Spokane Tribe project area include timber production, outdoor recreation, and subsistence hunting, fishing, and gathering. The Spokane project area is currently managed as multiple use forestland and projected land use within the project area will support and promote large, intact blocks of native forests in eastern Washington state.

Sealaska’s second carbon offset project supports large, intact blocks of native forests. Project proceeds will be invested back to Sealaska shareholders, businesses, and communities. For multiple generations, the project area will be untouched by commercial harvesting. Shareholders will retain full access to the area for cultural needs such as logs for totem poles, other cultural projects, and non-timber development opportunities.

Sealaska is dominated by large contiguous blocks of mature, healthy forests supporting native flora and fauna. Committed to the protection of Alaskan waters, the project includes sensitive watersheds that are important sources of drinking water for Alaskan communities in Hydaburg and Hoonah and critical habitat for salmon.

Huna Totem’s temperate rainforests are among the most productive in the world. After past harvesting, Huna Totem now focuses on forest protection to provide non-timber values including watershed health, wildlife habitat, subsistence hunting, fishing, and gathering opportunities for native Alaskan communities. In addition, their carbon offset project will create forest-related job and training opportunities for shareholders.
