The project’s carbon operating agreement was generously underwritten by a Doris Duke Climate Change Initiative funded grant through the Land Trust Alliance.

Purchased by The Nature Conservancy (TNC) in 2019, Ataya is a historic conservation success for TNC’s Central Appalachian Program. Managed as a working forest, the 100,000-acre property links the North Cumberland Wildlife Management Area in Tennessee and the Cumberland Gap National Historic Park in Kentucky. Ataya is part of one of the nation’s most important corridors for animal migration as the region’s climate changes.

In addition to supporting environmental education, forest carbon revenue enables MAS to continue a legacy of conservative forestry and focus their operations on restoring high quality New England forest habitat.

Purchased by The Nature Conservancy in 2019, the Highlands property is managed as commercial timberland under the Forest Stewardship Council certification program. While a portion of the property is leased for hunting, approximately 30,000 acres are open to public hunting access through Virginia’s Public Access Lands for Sportsmen (PALS) Program – the first of its kind in Virginia.

The threat of subdivision, development, and loss of public access to the Farm Cove Community Forest lands motivated the formation the Downeast Lakes Land Trust (DLLT) in 2001. DLLT partnered with Finite in 2010 to develop the Farm Cove forest offset project which became California’s very first completed and registered compliance offset project in December 2013.
