Cooks Branch Conservancy

Tall pine trees in Cooks Branch Conservancy stretch under a clear blue sky. Sparse undergrowth is dotted with grasses and scattered bushes, creating a serene, untouched landscape.

overview

An ecological oasis in a rapidly urbanizing landscape, Cooks Branch is a pristine area. Stewarded by the Mitchell Family since the 1960’s, Cooks Branch harbors old growth loblolly pine stands and one of the highest densities of endangered Red-cockaded Woodpeckers (RCW) in Texas. The Mitchell Family’s enrollment in a forest carbon project helps to ensure the protection of this increasingly rare Texas forest habitat.
