Welcoming Claire Leuty to Our Team
Finite Carbon is pleased to welcome Claire Leuty to the team as our newest Carbon Forest Analyst.
Claire joins us with a unique academic and professional background spanning both forestry and mathematical physics. She holds a Master of Forest Conservation from the University of Toronto and studied Theoretical and Mathematical Physics at the University of Waterloo, bringing an analytical mindset grounded in hands-on operational forestry experience. Claire is also a Registered Professional Forester in Ontario and holds a seed collection certification, a slightly more niche credential.
Over the past five years, Claire worked as a Forest Technician with Conservation Halton in a variety of field-based forestry roles. Joining Finite provides an opportunity to reconnect with the analytical side of her background while continuing to work closely with sustainable forest management.
Her blend of technical analysis and hands-on forestry experience has shaped much of her career to date. From tree planting and forest management planning to prescription development and field logistics, Claire has contributed across nearly every stage of forestry projects, often working within small, multidisciplinary teams. Those experiences gave her a strong appreciation for how planning decisions translate into operational realities in the field and for the importance of balancing analytical thinking with practical realities.
Claire is particularly drawn to making complex information accessible and meaningful. She enjoys transforming challenging and often technical data into clear, understandable insights, which makes this role a natural fit for both her skill set and interests.
Her interest in climate and forestry deepened during her studies, where she focused on atmospheric and oceanic dynamics and began exploring how mathematical principles could be applied to wildfire behavior and broader environmental systems. An early experience working alongside researchers at Environment and Climate Change Canada further reinforced her interest in climate-focused forestry and environmental analysis.
What stands out most in speaking with Claire is how naturally she connects her technical work with a genuine appreciation for the outdoors. Outside of work, she enjoys hiking, camping, cross-country skiing, and spending long days on the trail. And when we say hiking, we mean it – last summer, Claire completed a roughly 94 km backcountry hike carrying all her own gear and dehydrating her food for the trip.
Another fascinating hobby of Claire’s is aerobatics; she is an avid aerial silks performer, combining movement, biomechanics, and storytelling through themed performances inspired by science fiction and fantasy worlds. And yes, she is also a devoted fan of The Lord of the Rings.
When asked about her favorite tree species, Claire quickly chose Eastern Hemlock, describing the species as deeply connected to memories of camping and summer, while also recognizing the importance of protecting increasingly threatened forest ecosystems from threats like the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid.
That appreciation for forests, paired with a thoughtful and grounded approach to problem-solving, is exactly what makes Claire such a strong addition to our team.
We are excited to welcome her and look forward to the insight, energy, and expertise she will bring to our work.
